De los sueños de infancia a EntomoBoxes: Un viaje de pasión, ciencia y creatividad

Many people ask me how EntomoBoxes came to be. The answer isn't found in a business plan, but rather in my DNA and my earliest childhood memories. My name is Chris, and this is the story of how an innocent curiosity for butterflies transformed into my life’s work.

Cómo empezó todo

Mientras mis compañeros estaban obsesionados con los coches de juguete y los superhéroes, yo vivía en un mundo completamente diferente. Mi superhéroe era Sir David Attenborough (¡y sigue siéndolo! 😄). Mientras otros se quedaban dentro, yo estaba afuera jugando con todo lo que se movía – llevando a casa lagartos, serpientes y erizos.

Mi camino hacia la entomología comenzó de forma sencilla: con una red de mariposas que mi abuelo me hizo a mano con un viejo saco de patatas. Creo que todos estamos programados de forma diferente, destinados a amar algo único. Eso es simplemente la evolución – buscando constantemente nuevos caminos y alternativas para convertirnos en una especie más especializada y diversa con cada generación.

La entomología es más que una simple colección

Lo que comenzó como cazar mariposas pronto se convirtió en entomología seria (aunque amateur). Aprendí rápidamente que coleccionar mariposas es mucho más que tener cajas de especímenes. Se trata de entender la naturaleza – estudiar hábitats, literatura, cría y los distintos estadios de desarrollo.

I’ve always lived by one quote: "We can only protect what we truly understand."

For me, building a collection is a contribution to human knowledge. My specimens are always available to scientists for research, and one day, they will become part of a museum. They will serve as a continuation of the time series started by Carl von Linné and his colleagues in the 18th century. These collections are vital archives of DNA data that future generations will use for research we can’t even imagine yet.

De la ciencia al taller

My desire to pursue biology professionally led me to a Master’s degree in Zoology and eventually to a PhD program in Entomology. I spent years in the field researching mountain butterflies, but during my studies, something else was brewing.

I started making my own high-quality equipment - specifically pinning boards. A thought took root in my head: “If these pinning boards are the best for me, maybe others would like them too?” As a teenager, I dreamed of having my own shop, but I never imagined it would actually happen. A few days after posting my first pinning board online, I received my first order. That spark started a drive that hasn't stopped since.

El salto al vacío

Pronto me di cuenta de una verdad fundamental: me encanta consumir resultados científicos, pero por naturaleza soy un creador. Necesito diseñar, explorar la fabricación y trabajar con mis manos. Estar sentado detrás de un ordenador haciendo investigación académica estaba sofocando mi creatividad.

I decided to take a step into the unknown and dedicate myself fully to EntomoBoxes. A close friend, who had been in business long before me told me: "Don't worry. Once you focus only on your shop, you’ll earn more than you do as a PhD student within months, because you love it and you do it well."

Tenía razón. Hoy puedo realizar todas mis ideas e innovaciones. Para mí nunca se trató del dinero, sino de la capacidad de reinvertir en el negocio para crear mejores productos para la comunidad.

Construyendo una comunidad de futuros científicos

What motivates me today is more than just sales. It’s the community. I often receive messages from parents saying their son or daughter is thrilled with their new butterfly starter set. They’ve started reading books, studying insects, and are even considering studying biology.

Creo firmemente que cuantas más personas se interesen por los insectos – incluso como aficionados – más conocimiento aportamos a la humanidad. A través de EntomoBoxes no solo vendo suministros; ayudo a construir un puente entre la curiosidad y la ciencia.
